Valvano has standout day as Mustangs top Waterloo 51-24 in OUA West Semi-Final

LONDON, ON – Mustang playoff football is back as Western faced-off against a traveling Waterloo Warriors team looking for revenge.

Western opened its quarter final game on the back foot and let the Warriors offense control the pace of play. TheWaterloo opened the scoring early with a touchdown 4 minutes into the first quarter and managed to come out of it with a lead.

A slow start and patchy defense had shaken the Mustangs confidence but capitalizing on their offensive possessions early kept them in the game. Daniel Valente Jr changed the momentum early with an interception. That play sparked the Mustangs getting on the board after getting great field position and that led to a Keon Edwards touchdown on the ensuing drive.

Antonio Valvano, the Mustang Full Back, was integral to the victory today. He ended the game with 3 receptions, 2 touchdowns, one of which where he ran for 40 yards.

"He's been here as long as I have" Coach Marshall joked about Valvano "You know what, he plays with his heart on his sleeve, he's a leader on our team, emotional player who plays every play like it's his last down, he blocks, plays on special teams he does everything for us."

Valvano is a role player for this Mustang Offense, and he stepped up big when it mattered most, helping give the edge to the Musangs in the decisive win.

"This one will definitely be extra special, 2 touchdowns, I've never experienced that before, but I know my roll, everyone on the team knows their role, when your numbers called you have to step up and execute" said Valvano post game.

Valvano could not have his 3 receptions if it weren't for Quarterback Evan Hillock's performance in his OUA playoffs debut. Hillock made good decisions quickly and ensured to place the ball expertly.

"He put the ball in good spots, made good decisions, was sharp throwing the football, I thought he played very, very well" said coach Marshall. Valvano seemed to agree saying "Evan Hillock is a stud, a pure stud, and I think people are starting to take notice and they should."

Hillock is a key cog in Greg Marshall's offensive system, and he continues to prove this week after week. His efficiency and deception in the pocket are extremely useful, especially with the backfield Western possesses.

"Teams are going to be worried when you've got the 2 best running backs in the league, we can take advantage of that, be a balanced team and throw the ball to our great receivers," said Hillock.

After the offensive shootout in the first half, the second half was largely defensive with some solid plays including the Mustangs shutting down the Waterloo offense, not allowing them any points in the second half and getting to standout Waterloo QB Tre Ford as much as possible.

Western now sets their sights on the OUA West Finals next weekend when they face Guelph, the only team to beat them this season. Tickets for the game will go on sale Monday Nov 8 at 12pm. It's a game all involved are keenly interested in.

"I can't wait for next week, right back to work tomorrow morning and Guelph is a great team no doubt but I am really looking forward to it." said Hillock.
