London, ON - Mustangs Men's Hockey defenceman Austin Osmanski is continuing his hockey career, moving to the pro level, signing with the Springfield Thunderbirds of the AHL this week.
"It's a two-way AHL contract with Springfield Thunderbirds and I will be spending my ECHL time with Worcester Railers starting this week for the remainder of 21-22 season."
Osmanski was playing in his 2nd season with the Mustangs after finishing his OHL career with the Peterborough Petes.
"Austin has developed a great deal in his 3 years in our program and was a very important part of our team." said Mustangs Head Coach Clarke Singer. "We wish him the best as he begins his professional hockey journey."
Osmanski was off to a hot start to the 2021-22 season with 1 goal and 7 assists in their 8 games so far.
"Once the season was originally postponed to Jan 24, I started to survey my options and received some calls. I felt it was time to take control of my future and put myself in a position to succeed both short and long term." said Osmanski "We really do have an unbelievable environment at Western from the coaches, teammates, trainers, equipment, and all academic supports. I will remain enrolled in all my classes virtually for this semester and plan to complete my degree while actively playing professionally. This was not by any means an easy decision, however, the support has given me confidence."
Osmanski was a 7th round pick of the Buffalo Sabres in 2016.
"Clarke Singer has had a greater impact on my life and career than anyone I have ever met in hockey and he will forever be someone I'm eternally grateful for and hope to continue the relationship for a very long time. I would give the shirt off my back for Clarke, Clarke's staff, and anyone else who has been a part of our success," said Osmanski. "Hopefully given this situation we are currently living in, changes to rules and policies. It takes a lot to be an international student-athlete, and I'm extremely thankful for the relationships and support I have received as a Mustang."
Osmanski will practice with the Railers this week and expects to be in their lineup starting this weekend.
