Western loses 5-0 to Toronto Varsity Blues at Home

London, ON- Mustangs returned home to face Toronto Varsity Blues after a big 8-4 win in Waterloo last night, but was unable to crack Blues' goaltender and lost 5-0 to Toronto.

The first period Western struggled to gain momentum being in the box twice in the first 10 minutes of the first. Before being able to regroup after the second kill, Toronto's Moskal was able to score off a fluky bounce putting the Blues up 1-0 halfway through the first. After another kill with 6 minutes left, Western couldn't generate any threatening offense, finishing the period down 1-0 to Toronto. Shots after the first were 15-5 in favour of Toronto.

The second period special teams played more in the Mustangs favour. The Mustangs started the period off on a powerplay, and had a 5-on-3 opportunity 8 minutes into the second period, but were unsuccessful in finishing on either opportunity.

Later in the second, Toronto had some offensive pressure, and Ross Krieger was able to score off a second rebound with just over 7 minutes remaining in the period, giving the Blues a 2 goal lead.

Western's Bruder took a cross checking penalty with 3 minutes left in the second, which was quickly accompanied by a Toronto penalty 40 seconds later to put the teams at even strength. The Mustangs spent the last minute on the powerplay, but were unable to capitalize on their third powerplay of the period, leaving Toronto with a 2-0 lead going into the third.

Western also started the third period off on a powerplay. Three minutes later, Toronto was given another penalty, giving Mustangs their 6th powerplay opportunity of the game. However, Toronto's Moskal was able to find a loose puck and grab his second goal of the game. This shorthanded goal made it 3-0 Blues 5 minutes into the third.

The rest of the third period was hard fought between both sides. Western pulled their goalie with just over 3 minutes left to gain an extra attacker in hopes of scoring, but Toronto defenceman Smith was able to send Robinson a leading pass and he scored in the empty new making it 4-0 Blues with 2 and a half minutes to go. To end off the game, Mustangs took a penalty late, and Blues were able to get one on the powerplay with only 0.3 seconds left.

Western will face the York Lions on the 28th for a Friday night game at home. Puck-drop is at 7 pm, come out to support them at Thompson Arena.
