Box Score London, ON- Mustangs defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks 3-0 on the road tonight in Waterloo. Western had a strong showing, with Suitor and Kristoff getting their firsts of the season, and Kaitlyn Booth earning a shutout.
The first period saw strong play from the Mustangs, outshooting the Golden Hawks and generating lots of chances early. The first period also brought some special teams challenges for Western, finding themselves down a player twice. Western's penalty kill unit was able to fend off Laurier and kill off both.
Late in the first with just over 3 minutes left, Emma suitor caused a turnover in the Golden Hawk's end, deking around the defenseman, makes a move and tucks the puck around Laurier's Carlson's pads to get her first of the year and the Mustangs first of the game.
In the second period, Western had lots of offensive pressure, testing goaltender Carlson. They weren't able to capitalize until just over 6 minutes left in the second, Western defenseman Katie Irwin saw Laurier make a late change and took advantage, sending a stretch pass to send Jenna MacLean and Adeline Kristoff on a 2-on-1. MacLean slid it over to Kristoff who beat the goaltender with a quick one-timer. This gave the Mustangs a 2-0 lead just over halfway through the game.
The third period saw lots of back and forth action, with Laurier trying to get on a board, but could not break Booth's sights on a shutout.
With just over a minute left in the third, Western was able to clear it out of their end forcing Laurier to break out of their end with their goalie pulled. Western was able to gain possession in the neutral zone and Brooke DiCicco was just over the red line and shot it at the empty net, and it trickled in. This gave the Mustangs insurance, making it 3-0 late in the game.
Western out-shot the Golden Hawks 27-19, and were able to secure a goal each period. This 3-0 win moves Western into third place in the West, passing Windsor in the standings.
Western returns home for a Saturday night game against the first placed Waterloo Warriors, for their first matchup of the season. Puck-drop is at 7pm at Thompson Arena.
