London, ON- Mustangs faced the Lancers for the second leg of their double header, battling it out all the way until the end, but falling short in over-time. Western played the tough Brock Badger's hard, but weren't able to pull out a win in a tight game that was decided in overtime.
The Mustangs had good intensity and came into this game ready to face the Lancers after falling short last night with a 5-2 loss. Western came out firing in the first 20, testing the Lancers goalie. Despite lots of pressure from the Mustangs, Windsor was able to strike first, scoring 8 minutes in.
This goal gave the Mustangs an extra boost to finish on a scoring chance just 20 seconds later. Forward Michael Boushy beat his defenceman and slid it over to an open Sean Montgomery to net Western's first of the game and his 7th of the season.
Later in the first, MacDougall carried it into the Lancers end, sending a cross ice pass to defenceman Drew Wawrow who walked in and beat the Lancers goalie, giving Western their first lead of the game. This late goal at 17:29 made it 2-1 Western going into the second.
The scoring excitement continued in the second period, with Windsor coming out firing to try and steal the lead back. Halfway through the second, forward Shane Bulitka took a slashing penalty, giving Windsor a powerplay. Windsor's Stefano was able to capitalize during the man advantage, tying the game 2-2.
Just like in the first, after the Lancer's goal, Western responded quickly. Just a minute after Lancer's tying goal, Sproviero was able to find a loose puck bumbling around in the Windsor crease and tap it into the back of the net, giving Western the lead once again. However, the second period scoring action did not end there.
With just two and a half minutes remaining in the second, Windsor's Will Ennis was able to spoil Western's lead , scoring to make it a 3-3 game. The score remained for the rest of the second, heading into the third in a stalemate.
The third period featured high intensity, and some special teams opportunities. Halfway through the third the Mustangs were awarded a 5-on-3 opportunity, but wasn't able to convert. The third remained scoreless, forcing the game to go to overtime.
After early back and forth play, Mustangs players got caught in their own end and Windsor was able to take advantage and score, 3:37 into overtime. Windsor was able to come back from a 3-2 deficit, with final shots ending up 36-23 in favour of Windsor.
Western returns home next weekend to face the Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday the 18th. The game is at Thompson arena and puck-drop is at 7pm.
