Box Score

Guelph, ON- Mustangs took on the Gryphons for the second time this season, looking to steal the three points back from Guelph after losing 6-5 in October.

Western came out firing in the first period, buzzing around in the Gryphons end, generating lots of offensive pressure. Western was unable to capitalize on this pressure, and it was Guelph who were able to strike first late in the first with only three minutes remaining in the first.

With just a minute and a half remaining in the first, Reed Morison was able to force a turnover during a Gryphons break out in their own end. Morison stole a puck along the wall and took off towards the net, shooting far side and beating Guelph goalie Wickware.

The scoring in the first wasn't over though. With just over a minute left, Western's Ethan Browne took a hooking penalty. With 50 seconds left, Guelph was able to take advantage of their first powerplay of the game to take the lead. This late goal gave Guelph a 2-1 lead going into the second.

The Gryphons came out strong in the second to protect their lead, but Western goaltender Myskiw held strong stopping the Gryphons on 10 shot attempts in the second period alone. The second period saw lots of special teams opportunities, with both teams having three powerplays in the middle frame alone. Despite being given 3 1-man advantages, neither team was able to capitalize, leading to a scoreless second period.

The third period started out in a flurry. The Mustangs were still on the powerplay, and were able to bring it into the Gryphons end to try and capture one with only a minute left on the powerplay. Mustangs were able to set up in the Gryphons end, sending it back for a D to D pass, and a shot from the point. The shot was deflected and Mustangs Sean Montgomery was able to find a bouncing puck in the slot to tie the game at the beginning of the third.

After fighting back and forth to take the lead, there was an offensive faceoff for the Gryphons and Guelph was able to score off a rebound from a point shot. This gave the Gryphons their lead back, being up 3-2 with just 6 minutes remaining.

In a last attempt to tie the game, Mustangs pulled the goalie and called a timeout, resulting in a few close chances in the Gryphons end, but were unable to capitalize, ending in a 3-2 loss.

Western will continue their road games, facing the York Lions next Friday the 25th for their first regular season matchup against the Lions. Puck-drop is at 7:15 pm in Toronto and can be watched on OUA.tv.
