Box Score Toronto, ON – The Mustangs fell 3-1 to the York Lions Saturday night, concluding their opening road trip of the season.
Western fell in straight sets to the Lions Friday night, but came out firing in their opening set 24 hours later. Despite taking the first set convincingly at 25-16, the Lions would win the next three 25-23, 25-15, and 27-25.
Blake Fenwick led the way for the Mustangs with 13 kills, while Jonah Millard had 8. Both Nicolas Folz and Jason Guy had 6 kills and 1 ace, while Josh Thorson had 4 kills and 2 aces.
Western got out to an electric 9-1 lead to open the set, thanks to kills from Fenwick, blocks from Guy and Millard and a Folz ace.
The Mustangs continued to run away with the set, eventually taking it comfortably 25-16.
It was York who got off to a 2-0 start in the second, before a kill from Guy got Western on the board. A kill from Fenwick gave the 'Stangs a small lead at 5-3 before the hosts strung together four consecutive points to get ahead.
Tied at 12, 13, 14, 15 and then 17, this set proved to be a lot closer than the first. Some Western errors eventually saw York get in front at 23-20. The Lions would take the set 25-23.
The team's exchanged points to start the third, with things staying close at 12-11. York then went on to win the next 10 points, going up 21-13 and running away with the set.
Despite a kill from Guy and a Jack Cochran ace, the purple and white couldn't climb back into this one as the hosts took it 25-15.
Millard got the Mustangs on the board to start the fourth, as they went up 2-1.
Tied at 5, York won the next four points with the help of some Western errors to go up 9-5 and cause the 'Stangs to take a timeout.
Western tied things up again at 13, thanks to kills from Folz, Fenwick, Conor Doran, and some York attacking errors, but the Lions continued to pile on the offensive pressure to grab set-point at 24-21.
Kills by Folz and Fenwick alongside a Fenwick block and a York error tied things up at 24 for the 'Stangs as they refused to go out without a fight. Despite their resilience and determination, they fell just short losing the set 27-25 and the game along with it.
The Mustangs now drop to 2-3 on the season with the loss, while the Lions improve to 4-1.
Western will host Trent on Friday, Nov. 25
