Box Score London, ON- Mustangs faced the Lions on the road tonight for their second matchup of the year, battling it out all the way until the end, but falling short in the end. Western played the Lions hard, but weren't able to pull out a win in a tight game that brought excitement until the final seconds.
The Mustangs had good intensity and came into this game ready to face the Lions, despite having a close chance and coming out firing, York was the team to strike first, getting on the board just over a minute into the game.
After a shot from the point, Langdon and Boushy both took a crack at it, before Western's Andrew Bruder scored on a rebound to get his second of the year and bring the game to 1-1. The period would finish out a tie, with Mustangs looking to capitalize more on these chances later in the game.
The back and forth excitement continued in the second period, with Western coming out firing to try and get their first lead of the game. Seven minutes into the second, Western came into the York end on a 3-on-2, with Leblanc passing it to Murray in the middle, who slid it over for Van Impe to score a rocket of a one timer to take the lead in the second.
However, the home team York was not done yet. York was able to take advantage of an extra attacker on their powerplay and get one halfway into the second, bringing the game to a tie once again. The second would finish out in a stalemate, so this game would be decided in the third.
The third period featured high intensity, with lots of back of forth play from both teams looking to take the lead. Halfway through the third, York was able to capitalize on McNaughton to take their first lead of the game. The third saw lots of tough battles, with only three shots being recorded in the period.
With two minutes remaining, Western pulled their goalie for a last attempt to tie the game. However, York's McIntosh was able to take advantage of the empty net, scoring his first of the year to put the Lions up 4-2 with just over a minute to go. The Mustangs did not quit though, calling a timeout to set up an offensive zone play. This timeout paid off, as the Mustangs were able to score off a rebound off of a faceoff play with just 50 seconds to go.
Unfortunately, the Mustangs were unable to find another goal in the remaining 50 seconds, and lost 4-3 to the Lions. Final shots were 25-25, resemblant of the back and forth battle.
Western returns home on December 2nd to face the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Friday the 18th. The game is at Thompson arena and puck-drop is at 7pm.
