Hamilton, ON – The Mustangs Water Polo team had a hard-fought weekend at the OUA Championship, just falling short of the bronze medal.

The weekend started out with the Mustangs taking on the uOttawa Gee-Gees on Friday night in the quarterfinal. The Gee-Gees started strong holding a 6-4 lead after the first quarter. The second frame was quiet on both sides with a combined three shots finding the back of the net. Ottawa led 7-6 at the half. After the break, Western was down 8-6 early on but fought their way back to a 10-10 score at the end of the 3rd. The Mustangs would finish out the game strong, adding 6 more goals in the final frame earning a 16-13 victory to book their spot in the semi-final. Duncan Suffield led Western with five goals in the win.

On Saturday afternoon the Mustangs took on the five-time defending champion Toronto Varsity Blues. Western knew this was going to be a tough hill to climb and the dominance of the Varsity Blues showed early with a 9-0 lead after the first quarter and, despite the Mustangs netting two goals in the second, expanded the lead to 16-2 by half time. The second half was much of the same with the defending champions recording twelve more goals and rounded out a 28-3 win. Andres Medina and Alexander Kosivchenko were the goal scorers for the Mustangs. With the result, Western would be headed to the bronze medal match.

The Sunday afternoon bronze medal match would pit the Mustangs against the Queens Gaels.
Queen's got off to a quick start, going up 2-0 just a minute and a half into the contest. The Mustangs got on the board to draw within one, but the Gaels pushed for more and led 5-3 after the first quarter. Neither team mustered much offence in the second frame, keeping the score 5-3 at the halftime break. The Gaels and Mustangs both added five goals apiece in the third and Queen's maintained a 10-8 advantage headed into the final quarter of play. The Gaels and Mustangs combined for ten goals in the closing minutes of play but despite a last-minute push by Western, it was Queen's that came out on top, 15-13, earning the win and the 2022 OUA bronze medal. Duncan Suffield led the Mustangs with 4 goals in the game including 3 goals in the 3rd quarter.

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues captured their sixth straight OUA title with a 24-4 win over Carleton in the gold medal match.
