London, ON - A pair of early goals in the first two periods saw the Mustangs drop a 4-0 loss to the Guelph Gryphons on Friday night.
The Gryphons opened the scoring at the 1:09 mark of the first period when Hannah Tait got a backhand to the top corner over the shoulder of Mustangs goaltender Kaitlyn Booth.
"We've been playing some good hockey the last few games with some great energy and compete and tonight we just didn't have that," said Mustangs Head Coach Candice Moxley "After they (Guelph) scored that first one early it was hard for our girls to rally after that."
In the second period the Gryphons would strike early again when Abby Davies would pick-off a puck at the Western blue line and skate the length of the ice and finish off the play to give the Gryphons a 2-0 lead on a shorthanded marker.
Guelph would add two more goals before the end of the 2nd period to take a 4-0 lead into the intermission.
Western would put up a more solid effort in the 3rd period, outshooting Guelph 7-5 but they weren't able to crack the scoreboard.
"You can't come out every game with your absolute best effort although we strive for it, but I think our group learned some valuable lessons tonight," said Moxley.
The Mustangs have a quick turn around as they are on the road to Toronto Saturday afternoon as they take on the TMU Bold for a 4:15pm puck drop. Fans can watch the action on OUA.tv.
