Mustangs show grit but drop 3-2 road meeting with Guelph

12/1/2022 9:43:00 PM

Box Score Guelph, ON – The Mustangs kept it tight but couldn't find the extra marker and fall 3-2 to the Guelph Gryphons on Thursday night.

In the second meeting of the season, the Gryphons would draw first blood with just over five minutes remaining in the first period off a bouncing puck in front of the Mustangs net. Guelph's Maya Graham found a rebound off an Alexie Olivier shot to give the Gryphons a 1-0 lead.

The Mustangs would respond, with just under two minutes left in the period Grace Bellamy would pick the puck off just outside the Guelph zone, skate the puck along the left wing and fired the puck short side into the Gryphons net to even the game at 1-1.

After getting called for body checking with under a minute left in the first period, Guelph would regain the lead when Meaghan Chittick would send a seeing eye shot into the Western net from the blue line on the power play and take a 2-1 lead into the intermission.

Neither side would score in the second period and most of the third period when Western would pull their goalie and Guelph would make them pay with an empty net goal and extend the lead to 3-1 with 1:24 remaining.

Western wasn't done though, as Guelph tried to clear the zone but the puck was picked off by Emma Suitor who skated it towards the net, slid the puck to Adeline Kristoff who didn't miss and brought the Mustangs within a goal.

Western would put up a late effort into the Guelph zone but wasn't able to convert and drop the game 3-2.

Kaitlyn Booth made 13 saves on the night on 15 shots faced.

The Mustangs are back on home ice on Saturday night when they take on Laurier for a 7:00pm puck drop. Tickets are on sale now at WesternMustangs.ca/tickets and if you can't be at the game in person, you can watch the action on OUA.tv.
