Mustangs sweep Paladins in Kingston

Kingston, ON – The Mustangs travelled to Kingston for a double header against RMC this weekend, taking home two 3-0 victories to close out the first part of the season.

The weekend was a great opportunity for the 'Stangs to utilize their bench, with a wide range of players seeing playing time.

The Mustangs kicked things off with a 25-7 first set win on Friday, which they followed with 26-24 and 25-17 set wins. Saturday was similar, as the 'Stangs took home another 3-0 win with 25-11, 25-20 and 25-18 wins.

Friday night saw Devin Gerth lead with 11 kills, while Jaeya Brach followed with 9. Ava Ebert had 6 kills, while Lindsay Kleuskens and Janelle Albert followed with 2. Hannah Joo registered 33 assists.

Mya Newton led with 9 kills and 4 aces on Saturday afternoon, while Claire Stewart and Brach had 9 and 8 kills respectively. Kleusekens had another 2 aces, while Joo added 34 assists to her name.

Friday was the first match-up against the Paladins, with the Mustangs taking the first four points of the opening set thanks to kills from Ava Ebert and Kate Van Camp, and a Hannah Joo ace.

The purple and white continued their dominance throughout the set, holding RMC to only 7 points in a 25-7 first set victory.

The second set was closer. The team's exchanged points to open the set, as they fought to take control over the second frame of action. The hosts had set point at 24-22, and again at 24-23. A RMC error and Joo ace helped tied things up at 24, before another RMC error sent set point the way of the purple and white. A Jaeya Brach kill won the set for the Mustangs at 26-24.

With the Paladins leading at 3-1 in the third, the Mustangs won the next four points to take control at 5-3. The hosts managed to keep things close to start, before Western took control and eventually closed out their first game of the weekend with a 25-17 third set win.

Saturday proved to be no different, as Western dominated yet again.

Despite the hosts taking the lead at 2-1 in the first set, the Mustangs strung together point streaks to take a dominant lead at 11-5. Another 5 consecutive points would see the purple and white go up 17-7, before they eventually took the set 25-11 off a kill from Brach.

RMC took the first four points in the second set, putting Western on their heels. The 'Stangs saw their first lead of the set at 19-18 thanks to Claire Stewart, which they held onto to claim the second 25-20.

The purple and white then went on to claim the final set 25-18, closing out the game and the weekend series.

The Mustangs now sit at 8-1 on the season, and will head on holiday break. They will return to action on the road against Lakehead on January 6th at 7pm.
