Box Score LONDON, ON - Western and Guelph both returned to OUA play after the lengthy COVID pause on Friday night at Thompson Arena. The Mustang managed to control large portions of play throughout the night and came out of the contest with a 6-2 win.
Western lost 5Â key players to professional contracts over the break but it's depth proved to be the answer in this match. Head coach Clarke Singer mentioned post game.
"I think for a lot of teams, no matter the sport, having great depth is necessary"
Singer named a new captain pre game as Komoka native Kyle Petit now wears the 'C' on his jersey.
"It feels good, anytime you're recognized as a leader on the team it's a big honour but nothing changes for us."
Guelph opened the scoring but a quick response by Western's Michael Boushy tied the game back up.
Â
Western did not relapse the score after this point and after a scrappy end to the first period they scored 3 goals in the second period to take hold of the game.
Franco Sproviero was a participant in the early scrum and proved to be a thorn in the side of the Gryphons all game long. He put 2 behind the Guelph Goaltender.
Â
"I'm used to the guys running around after me it actually brings out the best in me. I get angry and I play better so, keep doing it." Sproviero said post game.
Goaltender Dylan Myskiw collected his first OUA win stopping 18 of 20 shots. Another important first, defenceman Jake Gravelle scored his first OUA goal.
Â
Western powered through the Gryphon's lineup with their great depth and exceptional team play.
"It's obviously crucial, we're uncertain how long the season will go from here but we're just going to try and win as many games as we can." said Pettit "Having that first one builds confidence obviously and we get to play Guelph tomorrow and hopefully we can have the same result."
Coach singer echoed his new Captains sentiments.
"Loved the effort and the commitment, talked about some little things before the game about changing our play style and the guys executed. Great for Dylan to get his first OUA win, he's working so hard great to step up."
Western played as a unit and it proved successfully with the new guys in the line-up contributing. This new look Mustang roster intends on pushing for the playoffs and making a splash despite the uncertainties that lay ahead.
