Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Evan Doyle

Mustang Offense Goes Quiet in Loss to Laurier

LONDON, ON - The Western Mustangs entered this game immediately on the back foot. Laurier pressured early and often forcing shots and offensive rushes right off the puck drop.

The Mustangs were only able to generate 4 shots in both the first and second period, tallying 8 after 40 minutes played.

The Second period is when the Golden Hawk offense went to work, they book-ended the frame with a goal in the first and last minute of play.

Western's penalty trouble hindered them from sustaining any offensive pressure. Assistant Coach Blair Webster said post-game.

"its tough we talked about being disciplined before the game started and some of them were maybe borderline calls but we can't be doing what we were doing, that put us behind the 8-ball"

Webster believes the penalties weren't the only problem that held the Mustangs out of this game, citing problems on their own power plays.

"End of the day, overall it wasn't the penalties that killed us we just weren't good enough. We had our chances on the power play and couldn't capitalize. You don't win too many hockey games when you don't score any goals"

The Mustangs generated 10 shots in the third period, eclipsing their total in the first two periods combined, largely due to desperate play and Laurier playing safe hockey offensively to not let the game slip away.

Their game on Thursday was postponed due to weather and despite missing the game Coach Webster believes it was a mindset issue rather than being a step behind.

"I think there was a number of factors, overall, they didn't come out with the right mind set. Overall, we may have only played 10 or 15 minutes of good hockey out of 60 and you can't do that in this league"

Goaltender Kaitlyn Booth held her ground only allowing 2 goals on 33 shots. One of which came on a Laurier power play.

The Mustangs have an off day tomorrow and look to come out strong at Waterloo on Friday February 25 at 7:00 pm.
