Mustangs get shutout on the road to Waterloo

Waterloo, ON – The Mustangs fell 4-0 Friday evening against the first-place Warriors in the first game of a weekend home-and-home series.

The penalty box became a familiar place for the purple and white, with their first penalty coming less than 3 minutes in due to head contact. While they managed to hold off a strong Warriors powerplay this time, a Western slashing penalty would give the hosts a powerplay goal at 11:32 of the first period.

Waterloo would extend their lead early into the second, with the frame seeing no more goals afterwards despite the exchanging of penalties between the sides and the subsequent powerplay opportunities.

It only took 29 seconds into the third period for the Warriors to extend their lead to 3-0, putting Western in a tough position to crawl back into this one.

Subsequent body checking and cross-checking penalties would give the hosts a 5-on-3, yet the purple and white managed to fend it off with hopes of climbing back into the game.

Waterloo's final goal would come at the 14:21 mark of the third, and despite having an extra attacker near the end of the frame, the Mustangs just couldn't find their way back into it and ultimately fell 4-0.

Western was outshot 40-21 by their opponent, with netminder Kaitlyn Booth putting up a 0.9 save percentage. They now drop to 4-7 on the season and sit just above Laurier in the West division.

The Mustangs will look to bounce back tomorrow, February 26, at home in Thompson Arena for the second half of a back-to-back against the Warriors. Puck-drop is at 7pm with tickets being available to purchase at https://westernmustangstickets.universitytickets.com/w/event.aspx?id=1545&p=1
