Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Bella McLellan

Mustangs go down in back-to-back games against Laurier.

WATERLOO, ON - The Mustangs once again were unable to hold off the Golden Hawks, unfortunately losing once more, by 15 points this afternoon.

There was heavy contact throughout the game, starting with the opening quarter. The Mustangs opened scoring for the game, and they had strong passing throughout, doing a great job of finding the open man.

The Mustangs were without some star players this afternoon, leaving the rest of the team to fill in the gaps. Isaiah Familia and Tyson Dunn stepped up to help lead the team.

Familia started for the first time this season and significantly impacted the game flow, sinking essential shots for the team. Dunn made a significant contribution to the overall score for the Mustangs tonight, scoring an impressive 16 points off the bench.

While incredible plays were being made by the Mustangs this afternoon, the Laurier defence was placing a lot of consistent pressure on Western, making it difficult to see the full impact of the Mustangs scoring.

Laurier placed intense pressure on the ball carrier, often double-teaming right off the inbound. They were also doing well, converting points off turnovers.

The Mustangs managed to overtake Laurier in terms of offensive rebounds in the third quarter but just haven't been able to capitalise on as many of these second-chance shots.

Toward the end of the third quarter, Western's defence appeared tighter and more effective than earlier in the game, making it difficult for Laurier to have the same lanes down the court as before.

Western was able to hold it up and keep themselves in the game, maintaining a margin of around 10 points for the remainder of the game.

The Mustangs held together with a tight man-on-man defence, doing a great job of applying pressure and working together to cover the open man, helping them keep a close margin.

In the final quarter, Western did a much more consistent job of making clean defensive plays and holding the game within a handful of possessions.

However, with some bad luck sinking key buckets consistently throughout the game, the Mustangs, unfortunately, lost once again, ending the game down 95-80.

The Mustangs will play their next game this Wednesday, March 2, against Brock, in St. Catherine's at 8 pm. Fans can watch live at OUA.tv
