ST. CATHARINE'S, ON - It was a tough loss for this Mustangs team in St. Catharine's Wednesday night, as they fell to the Brock Badgers 77-58.
The Mustangs' defense opened strong, with several players making incredible blocks and causing a few turnovers.Â
Their defense held tight, maintaining a solid full-court press throughout the first quarter. The Mustangs held tight on Brock, not giving up any space and making them fight hard for every point.Â
The first quarter ended with only one possession, with the Mustangs trailing closely behind Brock, 16-14.Â
The second quarter opened just as strong as the first, and the Mustangs could take the lead over the Badgers just over 4 minutes into the quarter.Â
Brock began to be more efficient at holding Western out of the paint, and the Mustangs were able to utilise some good ball movement to their advantage.Â
After working hard to keep themselves in it, the Mustangs head into the third quarter down 38-30.Â
The third quarter opened strong, defensively, for the Mustangs as they held firm against Brock, cutting the lead in half in the first two minutes of the quarter.Â
However, the Badgers began to run away with it. They began crowding the key more and causing trouble for the Mustangs' scoring.Â
While the Mustangs consistently were able to beat Brock down on the court on defense, Brock was holding strong on keeping Western out toward the three-point zone. The game went into the final quarter, down by 21.Â
The Mustangs worked hard right to the end of the game, but unfortunately, they couldn't pull back into the game.Â
"I've been proud of them since the start of the season, it's not the way we wanted to end, but I'm definitely proud of how far they've come," said Head Coach Nate McKibbon.Â
With the result of this game, the Mustangs are no longer in the running for the OUA championship, and their 2021/22 season comes to a close.
