London, ON - The Mustangs opened the 2022 season with a trip to Guelph where they took on Brock & Laurier. Western is coming off an undefeated regular season last season that ended with a bronze medal in the OUA finals.
The first game of the day was a dominant 23-2 win over the Brock Badgers. Quinn Kolwich lead the way for the Mustangs with 5 goals and was also lead draw controls and ground balls. Lexie Delisle & Reese Wilkins added 3 goals and Jaime Atkinson had 2 goals and 5 assists.
"Huge shout out to Abby (Abigail Copeland) being awarded the hard hat for an awesome first game." said Lauren Tracogna, Fourth Year Midfielder.
"I think we stuck to our game plan in the first game even though the score was a bit lopsided. We were effective moving the ball and running our plays." said Mustangs Head Coach Garrett Loubert.
The second game of the day saw a lot of back and forth action for each side. Both teams were tied at 5-5 at half time and Western made some adjustments to finish strong and take a 9-7 win.
Lexie Delisle and Jaime Atkinson lead the team in goals with 3 each while strong defense in the second half from Rachel Reynolds, Taya Keast, and Olivia Morgan shut down Laurier to secure the win.
"Sam (Intranuovo) held her ground in goal with confidence helping the girls keep their 2 goal lead in the 4th against laurier." said Lauren Tracogna, Fourth Year Midfielder
"I thought Laurier played very well and got a lot of the ground balls. It was a good test for us starting off the season." said Loubert "Gives us some stuff to tinker with and bring into next weekend."
The Mustangs head to Waterloo next weekend where they will take on Guelph & McMaster at 12:00pm & 3:30pm.
