Box Score London, ON- An action packed game ends in overtime with the Lancers taking the win against the Mustangs.
To start off their two game weekend, the Western Mustangs play the Windsor Lancers in London. The Mustangs and the Lancers have met three times prior to this game during the season and the Lancers have taken the win each time. The Mustangs are now looking to end the Lancers winning streak.
The game starts off with great energy on the ice from both teams, which has been common when these teams play. The Mustangs start off strong in the first period with many opportunities to get the opening goal. The Mustangs forecheck at the beginning of the first period has been amazing, causing these opportunities. The first penalty of the game comes from a trip by the Mustangs. Shortly after the penalty was called, a two on one, short-handed, opportunity for the Mustangs generates the opening goal with the final shot coming from Elizabeth Gauthier. This puts the Lancers on their heels, but not for long as they tie up the game 1-1 during a power play goal. With the Mustangs eager to get back their lead, a breakaway from Emma Campbell turns into a penalty shot, but unfortunately the puck goes wide of the net and the score remains at tied at 1-1. The second half of the first period is filled with 4 more penalties by the Mustangs, three of them being body checking penalties and 1 being a double minor head contact penalty, which the Lancers received as well. Even with the many power play opportunities that the Mustangs are giving the Lancers, the score remains tied at 1-1 at the end of the first period. The double minor head contact penalty that was received by both teams will carry on to the second period.
Starting off the second period, the Mustangs take another penalty for tripping giving the Lancers an opportunity to take the lead. Kaitlyn Booth, the Mustangs goalie, is locked in as she does not allow for any pucks to pass her during this power play, and the score remains tied. The Lancers do seem to be dominating the game in the Mustangs end. With the Mustangs defense tired out, the Lancers take this to their advantage and take the lead of the game. Responding to this, the Mustangs offense begins to put pressure on the Lancers and another two on one breakout by the Mustangs ties up the game. Western's Alyssa Wouda takes the final shot to kill the Lancers lead. Nearing the second half of the second period, the Mustangs, on a power play, generate many scrambles at the Lancers net, ready to take the lead of the game. Unfortunately, none of these opportunities allows for a goal and the game is back to five on five. Although, even with the Lancers coming back to full strength, the action remains in their zone as the Mustangs are ready to get the next goal of the game, but the second period ends with the score the same at 2-2.
The final period of the game starts off with back and forth action as both teams are anxious to get take the lead. The Mustangs receive two more penalties, almost back to back, but their penalty kill allows for the score board to remain unchanged. As both teams are feeling tired out, the third period sees continuous, steady back and forth action. With ten minutes left in regulation, there is tension on the ice, felt by both teams, as the next goal will, most likely, dictate the winner of the game. The clock runs down to zero in the third period with the score at 2-2, and the game goes into overtime.
Overtime ends very quickly, within thirty seconds, with the Lancers taking the win abruptly.
