Box Score

London, ON- The Mustangs put up a strong fight, but lose to the Varsity Blues, 4-1.

Last weekend, the Mustangs had a tough two games, losing both in overtime. Tonight, they are looking to end that streak and take a win against the Toronto Varsity Blues.

The first period starts off with a power play for the Varsity Blues, not even a minute into the first period. This was a hooking penalty called on the Mustangs during a rush for the Varsity Blues towards the Mustangs net. During this power play, there are many opportunities for the Varsity Blues but their opportunities end abruptly as they take a penalty for interference just as their power play is about to end. The Mustangs have yet to get a shot on goal this game, and here is their opportunity to do so. They do this and much more as the Mustangs get the opening goal of the game on the power play. Mustang's Sarah Irwin, takes a shot from the point that makes it into the back of the Varsity Blues net, allowing the Mustangs to lead the game 1-0! After this goal, The Varsity Blues play hard to get a point on the board, but Kaitlyn Booth, the Mustangs goalie, keeps the lead for the Mustangs. Unfortunately, during a scramble at the Mustangs net, the Varsity Blues tie the game up 1-1, with half of the first period left. As the game is tied up, the plays are very back and forth as both teams eager to get the next lead. Both goal tenders are looking very solid as there has been a lot of net presence during the first period. The Mustangs take a penalty for interference with a minute left in the first period. As the first period comes to an end, the score remains 1-1, with great action in both zones, but neither team capitalizes on their opportunities.

The second period starts off with a power play for the Varsity Blues that was remaining from the first period, but the Mustangs kill the penalty off with ease and are back to full strength. There is a lot of neutral zone play and turnovers for both teams during the beginning of the second period. With just over half of the second period left, the Mustangs receive a penalty for hooking, and the Varsity Blues have a chance here to take the lead of the game. A rebound shot, still on the power play, will advance the scoreboard in favour of the Varsity Blues to 2-1. The Mustangs are looking to respond after that goal by attempting their break out into the Varsity Blues zone several times, applying pressure. Following this, some great puck movement in the Varsity Blues zone by the Mustangs ensures that the Varsity Blues goalie, Erica Fryer, is on her best game, which is she as no shots get through. During a play in the Mustangs zone, a puck was sent to the front of the net, and Kaitlyn Booth couldn't stop that one. The Mustangs are now down two goals as the score increases to 3-1 for the Varsity Blues. The end of the second period comes with the score as 3-1, Varsity Blues. This next period is crucial for the Mustangs.

The last period of the game starts with the pressure on the Mustangs to get some pucks to the net to either tie up, or take the lead the game before the third ends. The Varsity Blues have the opportunity to increase their lead from two to three on a power play with a five on three opportunity after two penalties are called on the Mustangs. The Mustangs penalty kill allows for both penalties to be killed off and for the team to return back to full strength. Shortly after, the Varsity Blues take a penalty, giving the opportunity of the power play to the Mustangs. This penalty is killed off as well with the score remaining the same at 3-1, Varsity Blues. Although, right after that penalty is killed, the Varsity Blues put the puck in the top shelf of the Mustangs net and the score is now 4-1. The Varsity Blues take a two player penalty and give the Mustangs a five on three opportunity, much like the Varsity Blues had in the beginning of this period. Fryer keeps her team in the game as she makes many amazing saves. The Mustangs then take a penalty and it is a five on four game, in favour of the Mustangs still. Both penalties are killed off and the teams are back to full strength after that string of penalties. With two minutes left to go, the Varsity Blues are called for another penalty and the Mustangs decide to pull Booth creating a six on four opportunity for the Mustangs. Even with the last minute efforts from the Mustangs, the game ends with the score as 4-1 for the Varsity Blues.

The Mustangs next game will be, January 23th, against the York Lions at 5:00pm in London. Be sure to check out the live action of that game at OUA.tv.
