Box Score Thunder Bay, ON- Mustangs came out hard against the Lakehead Thunderwolves, but couldn't pull out a win, losing 2-1 in Thunder Bay in their final matchup against Lakehead for the season. The Mustangs saw a strong performance from goaltender Dylan Myskiw who made 25 saves on 27 shots on goal.
Both sides came out with a strong start in the first, with both teams looking to get themselves into the game. It wasn't until fourteen minutes into the game that Lakehead would strike first. Forward Griffen Fox would find the back of the net to put Lakehead up 1-0 and get their first of the game. The first penalty of the game wouldn't be awarded until 20 seconds remaining in the first, giving the Mustangs a man advantage to begin the second off with, looking for a chance to tie it.
The second period saw lots of back and forth action, with both sides creating chances but unable to find the back of the net. With each team awarded a powerplay in the second, both had man advantages and tried to find opportunities to score. However, both teams were unsuccessful in a scoreless second. The Thunderwolves' would remain in the lead by one.
The third period consisted of lots of back and forth chances, with Western creating chances and looking to tie the game at one. The period went scoreless until just under halfway in the third when Lakehead's Joe Mack was able to score on a 2-on-1 to put the Thunderwolves' up 2-0 on the Mustangs.
However, just a minute later, Western responded. Sean Montgomery and Franco Sproviero were able to gain possession in the Thunderwolves' corner, with Sproviero sending it back to Jack York on the point. York shot it on a crowded net and was able to beat Thunderwolves goalie Cicigoi to give Western their first goal of the game and bring the score within 1.
With a minute left, Lakehead took a penalty. This gave the Mustangs an offensive zone faceoff, and the ability for Western to pull their goalie to play 6-on-4, looking for a tying goal. Lakehead was able to fend off Western's advantage, blocking shots and holding strong out front to pull off the 2-1 win at home.
Western will look to change pace at their next road game on Friday in Waterloo against the Warriors. Western's previous matchups against the Warriors have both been successful, so they will look to complete the season sweep. Puck-drop is at 7pm and can be watched on OUA.tv.
