The Mustangs take the 2-1 win in OT against Windsor

London ON - In overtime, the Mustangs take the win against the Lancers 2-1.

The Mustangs faced off against the Windsor Lancers tonight on the Mustangs home ice.

The past three times that these teams have played, the Lancers have taken the win all times. Tonight, the Mustangs looked to break that streak.

The first period started with hustle from both teams, although the Mustangs put more pressure on the Lancers not allowing them a second to breathe. Lancer's goalie, Cadence Petitclerc, had to be on her best game due to the many scoring opportunities that the Mustangs had generated in the beginning of the game.

Toward the end of the first, the Lancers seemed to have trouble controlling the puck as the Mustangs clearly dominated. Although, even with the chances, neither team could capitalize and put the puck in the back of the net. Mustangs goalie, Emma Catalano has shut out the Lancer in the first period, and same with Petitclerc from the Lancers. The first period ended with the score as 0-0.

The Lancers started to get their flow back in the second period and began to dominate the game. As the Mustangs got put on their heels, the game started to get more physical with pushing in front of the net.

The Mustangs relentless pressure on the Lancers pays off as Adeline Kristoff gets the first goal of the game for the Mustangs!

The second period ended with the Mustangs up 1-0 over the Lancers. It was an active period with back and forth action. Both goalies, especially Catalano, played hard for their teams.

With the late second period goal by the Mustangs, the Lancers were hungry to bring the game back to equal.

Five minutes into the third, the Lancers in fact do equalize the score as Emily Eikelboom shoots just above Catalano's glove into the back of the net. The score came to 1-1 with fifteen minutes left in the game.

The third period went on with no further goals from either team. With two minutes left in the game, overtime was looming as the Mustangs call a timeout.

The clock winded down to zero in regulation time, and the teams went into overtime. This is the second time this weekend that the Mustangs will go into overtime.

During overtime, the Haylie Kirkpatrick took the game for her team with a breakaway goal!

"I was actually going to change and I saw the left side open. The nerves were definitely high but it went in! I feel like I've had some pretty good chances but haven't capitalized on them so it is a big relief. The dynamic of the girls this year and the energy is so good this year as a whole. It is another level of connection this year." says Kirkpatrick.

Rich Brown, Mustangs Coach speaks on the game, "I thought the girls played very nice tonight and smart as well, so it was nice to be rewarded. I think we had the puck more than they did in overtime. It was a super second effort goal towards the end of a shift and it was nice to see Haylie get rewarded there, she has had a lot of opportunities."
