Waterloo, ON - The Mustangs take a loss, 6-3, to the Laurier Golden Hawks after a tough battle.

The last time the Western Mustangs took on the Laurier Golden Hawks was in the 2022-2023 season. In the three games the two teams played, the Mustangs came victorious in one game and lost the other two.

The Mustangs are eager to take the win this game coming off a loss last night against the Toronto Varsity Blues.

The first period started off with a penalty by the Golden Hawks with 20 seconds into the period. Having an extra man on ice, the Mustangs capitalized on this opportunity with a point shot from Shane Bulitka, which hit the top corner of the Golden Hawks net and opened the score of the game.

With the Mustangs up 1-0, the Golden Hawks began handling the puck well and put the Mustangs on their heels with many shots on Mustangs goalie, Jack McNaughton, who held strong. Although, halfway through the first period, Golden Hawks' Thomas Lenart tied up the scoreboard, 1-1. Keeping up with this momentum, a rebound shot from Golden Hawks' Callum Chisholm, put his team in the lead 2-1. Following their second goal, Golden Hawk's Sullivan Sparks, put another one away on a rebound shot which increased the Golden Hawks lead 3-1, ending the first period.

The second 20 minutes of the game started with a power play for the Golden Hawks who took advantage of this opportunity and increased the scoreboard 4-1, thanks to Golden Hawks', Patrick Brown. The Mustangs then decide to pull goalie, McNaughton, to attempt to stimulate a change of pace in the game and put in back up, Dylan Myskiw. The Golden Hawks continue to drive their lead up to 5-1 as Nick Giunta puts one past Mustangs Myskiw halfway through the second period.

It became a pretty even game in the second period once the scoreboard hit 5-1. The Mustangs created good opportunities to score but Golden Hawks goalie, Christian Propp had been a wall since he let in the first Mustangs goal at the start of the game. Although, with 15 seconds left in the second period, Jake Gravelle from the Mustangs, put the puck into the Golden Hawks net and tightened the Golden Hawks lead to 5-2.

With three minutes into the third period, the Mustangs are eager for a lead change as Owen Saye scores for the Mustangs making it a two-goal game!

After the Mustangs get two back to back goals putting pressure on the home team, the Golden Hawks stop that streak with a goal from Bryce Sutherland putting his team up 6-3 which remained the score for the majority of the third period.

With two minutes left in the third period, Mustangs pull Myskiw, but unfortunately their efforts do not lead to a goal. This game ends in favour of the Laurier Golden Hawks, 6-3.

The Mustangs next game will be October 13th, against the Brock Badgers at 7:00pm in London. Be sure to check out the live action of that game at OUA.tv.
