London ON- Despite getting an early lead, the Mustangs came up short to the Concordia Stingers, losing 6-1 to open their weekend home stand.
The first period was Western's best of the night. They opened the scoring just two minutes into the game. An early power play with a great passing sequence that consisted of all five players touching the puck led to Andrew Bruder's third of the season.
Mustangs Head Coach Clarke Singer said, "I thought we carried the momentum over from our Lakehead weekend and had a really good first period, but after that Concordia was much better than us in all areas."
Although Mustangs got the icebreaker, Concordia came back quickly and by the end of the first period, were up 2-1.
Western struggled immensely in the second period, giving up three unanswered goals. This put the Mustangs in a challenging position to come back from.
After forty minutes, Jack McNaughton replaced Dylan Myskiw as the Mustangs goaltender. Regardless of the score, both Western goalies made some incredible saves to try and keep their team in the game. "Both him (McNaughton) and Dylan made big saves all night long and we just weren't good enough in front of them. We owe them a lot more then we showed." said Singer.
The third period showed a better defensive effort and some good scoring opportunities for Western, though they were unable to capitalize.
Mustangs are looking to improve their 1-9-0 record and bounce back after tonight's loss. Tomorrow's game will mark just over a third of the way through this 23-24 OUA season, so it'll be an important one to win to turn things around.
"We are hoping to improve on a lot for tomorrow's game. Its early in the season but tomorrow is an important game," said Singer. "We have to come out and be a lot better as a team and hopefully get a win".
Western will host the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks tomorrow night (Nov 11) at 7 PM at Thompson Arena. Mustang fans can buy their tickets at WesternMustangs.ca/tickets, and Western students get FREE admission to all regular season on-campus games with the Western ONECard.
