Western advances to U SPORTS Championship Consolation Final with a 5-2 win over host Queen’s

Kingston, ON - The Mustangs Women's Soccer team got some retribution for their OUA Semi Final loss the Queen's Gaels with a 5-2 win Friday afternoon in the U SPORTS Consolation Semifinal.

"Our main goal today was to try and avoid going to overtime or a shootout, so winning in regulation was great," said Gabby Kohut "Everyone brought the energy today and we wanted to prove any of our critics wrong that we could win this game,"

The Mustangs opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Gabby Kohut snuck past the Gaels  and found the back of the net to give Western a 1-0 lead.

Kohut would double Western's lead just six minutes later, securing a strong cross from Maya Lankin before firing a shot into the top corner.

In the 28th minute, The Mustangs would strike again as Reese Fowler made it 3-0, after a corner kick was deflected into the back of the net.

Queen's would find the scoreboard in the 41st minute to cut the Western lead to 3-1.

Both teams traded chances early in the second half, punctuated by two highlight-reel saves by Western goalkeeper Samantha St. Croix.

Natalie Abbate scored for the Mustangs in the 73rd minute to regain the Mustangs 4-1 lead.

Queen's responded in the 79th minute, but that was as close as they would get. Abbate would restore Western's three-goal lead in the 90th minute with a free kick from right outside the box.

"It was an exciting game, Queen's is a very good team," said Mustangs Head Coach Martin Painter "I thought it was just a great game of soccer today with a lot of quality from both teams with a lot of great goals,"

Gabby Kohut was named Western's Player of the Game.

With the win, Western advanced to the Consolation Final Saturday at 4 pm against the Ottawa Gee-Gees.
