Box Score North Bay, ON - The Mustangs put up a hard fight but fall to the Nipissing Lakers 5-0, on the road.
The Western Mustangs began their two game weekend with the first one on the road against the Nipissing Lakers.
The Lakers took an early lead of the game with a fast goal by Megan Hayhurst within 30 seconds of the first period. After this goal, the Mustangs applied more pressure as they were put on their heels from this quick goal.
Before the second period ends, the Lakers got a second goal to solidify their lead by two goals. Abby Lunney from the Laker increased the scoreboard for her team to 2-0.
The first penalty was called with five minutes left in the first period. Mustangs Arnica Bulmer drew a four minute penalty for slew-footing which opened up the opportunity for the Lakers to further their lead. Mustangs goalie Ella Brabrook played solid and the team killed the penalty with no more goals scored, which ended the first period.
Brabrook had definitely been the busier of the two goalies in the second period as the Lakers were eager to continue on their momentum and get their third. Although, Mustangs defence and Brabrook remained strong.
Halfway through the period, the Lakers broke through the strength of the Mustangs and scored another to make the score 3-0 for the home team. Malory Dominico got this one for her team. Shortly after this goal, Lakers Ashley Taciuk added another onto this for her team. The score was then 4-0 halfway through the second, in favour of the Lakers.
With three minutes left in the second, an unfortunate bounce for the Mustangs after a scramble in front of the net led to the fifth Lakers goal. Madison Desmerais got this one for her team and the second period ended here.
The last twenty minutes of the game began with energy from both teams with back and forth action. There was not much notable action within the first half of the period. It was clear that the Mustangs were eager to get a goal on Lakers goalie, Chantelle Sandquist. Unfortunately, the game ends with the score remaining 5-0 in favour of the home team, the Lakers.
The Mustangs next game will be tomorrow November 18th, against the Toronto Metropolitan University in Toronto at 4:15pm. Be sure to check out the live action of that game at OUA.tv.
