Box Score London, ON- The Mustangs take the win, 3-1, against the Gaels, on the road.
As their second last game of their regular season starts, the Western Mustangs face the Queen's Gaels. Looking back at these two teams history, the Mustangs have the lead against the Gaels. They have played each other once this season, with the game taking place in London. The Mustangs took victory of this game 3-1, and are hoping to recreate that game tonight.
The opening period is not filled with much thrilling action. After two penalties called on both teams, the score remains at zero. The Mustangs are looking to break the tie as they fight in the Gaels zone using their fore checking strength. As the period goes on, there is a lot of action in the neutral zone. There are a couple of solid scoring opportunities coming from both the Mustangs and the Gaels, but both goalies are standing strong. The period comes to an end with the score still remaining tied at zero, but both teams eager to change that in the next 40 minutes.
The second period starts off with the Mustangs taking a penalty, giving the Gaels a great opportunity to take the opening goal as they have a one player advantage. Fortunately, the Mustangs penalty kill will end that chance. The Mustangs have a couple great changes at the Gaels net to score the first goal of the game, but cannot execute the play. The period remains much like the first, as we are at the halftime mark and the score remains at zeros. The Gaels are called on a penalty for body-checking, and during these two minutes, the Mustangs capitalize on the opportunity. With one second left in the power play, Brooke DiCicco generates the opening goal for the Mustangs, putting them on the board! After the puck hits the back of the Gaels net, the score advances to 1-0, Mustangs. The second period buzzer sounds, with the Mustangs looking to keep their lead for the next 20 minutes.
The last period of the game begins as the Gaels are fighting hard to get themselves on the scoreboard to match up with the Mustangs. The Gaels are dictating the pace in this period as they are hungry to stop the Mustangs from taking the victory in this game. The Mustangs produce their first 'real opportunity' during this period by advancing their lead, an amazing way to use this opportunity! Sophie Young takes a flawless backhand shot in front of the Gaels net that soars to the back of the net to widen their lead against the Gaels. Shortly after this, the Gaels respond back. This spoils the game for Kaitlyn Booth, the Mustangs goalie, as the Gaels put the puck in the back of her net. The score is now 2-1, in favour of the Mustangs with about half of the period to go. Haylie Kirkpatrick, from the Mustangs, decides that this lead needs to be advanced once more as she takes a shot just below the blue line from a rush into the Gaels zone that lands smoothly in the back of the Gaels net. This puts the Gaels on their heels as the score is now 3-1, Mustangs. As the game comes to an end, there is a big scramble at the Mustangs net as the Gaels try to get one last opportunity to increase their score. Fortunately, the Mustangs do not allow for this and the buzzer goes, leaving the Mustangs victorious 3-1!
