North Bay, ON – The Mustangs concluded the regular season on Sunday taking home a straight sets victory on the road against Nipissing.
Looking to replicate their win against the Lakers on Saturday afternoon, the Mustangs took the first set 26-24, the second set 25-19 and the third 25-23 to sweep their weekend series. Jaeya Brach led Western with 11 kills, while Janelle Albert followed with 9 kills and 2 service aces.
The Mustangs doubled up on the Lakers early on at 4-2 to start the opening set, before things sat tied at eight.
The hosts took the lead at 19-15, before the 'Stangs fought back taking five of the next seven points to put them within one. A kill from captain Kate Van Camp tied things up moments later at 21.
After saving a Nipissing set-point, a kill from Jaeya Brach then put the set within reach for Western. Ava Ebert finished off the set for a final 26-24 victory.
The two sides exchanged points to start the set, before a Janelle Albert kill put the 'Stangs 13-11. Moments later, a block from Claire Stewart added to the tally eliciting a Nipissing timeout.
The purple and white kept the ball rolling, as Mya Newton and Lindsay Kleuskens helped give Western set-point at 24-18. A block from Hannah Joo gave the Mustangs the set at 25-19.
The 'Stangs came out firing in the third, looking to close this one out quickly as they sat doubled up on their opponent on 10-5. A Kleuskens kill and ace added to the cushion, while a Brach kill had the Mustangs up six at 20-14 with the set in sight.
The Lakers pushed back however, taking five of the next seven points to cut their deficit to three. Kills from Albert however game set-point to Western, which Brach finished off for a final 25-23 third set win.
With the win, Western finishes their season with a 17-3 record. Nipissing concludes their season dropping to 7-13. The focus for the Mustangs now turns to the playoffs, with more details to follow.
