Box Score Waterloo, ON- Mustangs came out hard against the Waterloo Warriors, and were able to complete the comeback to take the game in a nail-biting shootout. Helping to get the win, Franco Sproviero recorded his 9th goal of the season, and captain Kyle Pettit scored the overtime winner. Mustangs' goaltender Dylan Myskiw stopped 23 out of 24 shots in regulation and overtime, and stopped all three shooters in the shootout to pull out the win.
The first period put the Mustangs on their toes, with Waterloo's Cascagnette scoring just 3 minutes into the first to put Western down 1-0. Waterloo continued the pressure, outshooting the Mustangs 11-7 in the first, looking to notch another. Despite Mustangs' Tye McSorely taking a 5 minute slew foot penalty to put the Mustangs on a long kill, they were able to hold them to 1. They would look to tie in in the next 40 minutes remaining.
The Mustangs came out strong in the second, looking for a tying goal. With lots of offensive pressure and good scoring chances, success was found 6 minutes in. Trapping the Warriors in their end on a long shift, Eric Van Impe pinched in, getting a pass from Gravelle, Van Impe slid it across the crease to Franco Sproviero for him to put the Mustangs on the board and tie the game. Although the Mustangs continued the pressure, they were unable to find a game winner.
The third period consisted of back-and-forth pressure, with both teams looking for a goal to take the lead. With only one powerplay awarded during the period to Western, there was lots of hard fought 5-on-5 play. Both goaltenders were able to make some key saves and bring this game to a 1-1 tie after 60. This game would be need overtime.
The overtime continued in a similar fashion to the third period. Despite scoring efforts from both teams, neither could find a goal. Western did seem to have some momentum, outshooting the Warriors 5-1 in overtime. However, the game would move on to a shootout.
The first shot was taken by Western's Franco Sproviero, but Waterloo goaltender Sime was able to reach his pad back and make the stop. Following suit, Waterloo's first shot was also saved. The second shot for Western was by captain Kyle Pettit who deked to his backhand and raised it above the goalies pad to get the first and only goal in the shootout. The next three shots would all be stopped by the goaltenders to finish out the game 2-1 Western.
Western will be back in action tomorrow afternoon for their last matchup of the season against the TMU Bold. Puck-drop is at 3pm at Thompson Arena or can be watched on OUA.tv.
