Western walk away with 88-67 victory over Waterloo

WATERLOO, ON - The Mustangs faced-off against the Waterloo Warriors in their second-last road game of the regular season, and walked away with a dominant 21 point victory.

The Mustangs have been fighting hard all season, and top the league as the highest scoring team in their division, but are still trying to defy the odds and clutch a playoff spot in the 2023 OUA Playoffs.

Western opened the quarter out-scoring the Warriors 9-2, and throughout the first quarter the Mustangs were effectively holding Waterloo off improving their score until the final few minutes of the quarter.

Despite trailing throughout the night in scoring the Warriors were out-rebounding the Mustangs, they were just not having the same luck sinking shots.

With only two minutes remaining, Waterloo had only made three of 19 shot attempts, and the Mustangs had scored three times as many points as the home team.

Western dominated the first quarter, holding the Warriors back to half their score, at 23-11.

As the second quarter was underway, Waterloo seemed to be much more confident and controlled than the first, playing a much better opening few minutes, even going so far as to out-score the Mustangs in this quarter with just under four minutes remaining.

When the Warriors had slashed the Mustangs lead back down to single-digits, prompting a timeout from Western. This was immediately followed with the Mustangs extending their lead back out to 12 points with under two minutes until the second half.

The second quarter was much more powerful for the Warriors in comparison to the first, who were narrowly trailing the Mustangs in points scored this quarter.

At the start of the second half, Western had pulled back up to a comfortable lead of 47-31.

With the third quarter under way, the Warriors continued to put up a fight against the Stangs, who had only out-scored them by four points in the previous quarter, slowing down from the lead taken in the first.

Western was driving in deep to score, and had scored 14 points off 17 turnovers, helping them pull ahead to their 21 point lead with only two minutes remaining until the final quarter.

Despite clawing closer in the second quarter, the Warriors were not able to close the gap in the third, and as the final quarter started Western once again held the lead at 70-44.

The fourth quarter had the Mustangs continuing on their dominant play, consistently as they kept expanding on their lead. Waterloo was still out-rebounding the Mustangs, but Western was making better shots and putting up more points throughout the night.

As the game came to an end the Mustangs sealed the victory at 88-67.

Western returns back to Alumni Hall for their next game on Saturday, February 11 at 8 pm. Fans can purchase tickets at WesternMustangs.ca/Tickets.
