Western Mustangs Dominate TMU Bold in Thrilling 64-54 Victory

LONDON, ON - The Western Mustangs defeated the 11-1 TMU Bold on Saturday night, overpowering their opponent to walk away with a ten-point victory.

TMU began the game with the opening possession from the jump and went on to score the first four points of the game.

The Mustangs, however, took this as an opportunity to break out and went on to score the next eight points, doubling that of the Bold and giving them a 8-4 lead.

Western was a force defensively, consistently shutting down TMU before they have the chance to score, and beating their opponent down the court and getting between their player and the basket to steal back possession.

"It's been a big focus in practice for us, just to flow into offense, especially after our game yesterday," said Mustang Emily Capretta, "We also just have each other's backs, and we know that we're there, and it just all flows... it snowballs into a whole lot of good."

TMU fought back hard, and narrowed the Mustangs lead down to end the first quarter with the score at 16-13 in Western's favor.

In a similar fashion to the Mustangs opening run, the TMU Bold came out at the top of the second quarter with a run of their own, going up 12-02 pushing them ahead of the Mustangs.

"I thought today, more so than yesterday, in the first half they had a great understanding of who they were covering... you could just see them gaining confidence on every defensive stop," said the Mustangs' Head Coach, Nate McKibbon.

Although they trailed for much of the quarter, Western continued to fight just as tenaciously to pull back the lead. This fight was rewarded as the first half of the game closed out in a tie at 31 each following free throws from Paris Alexander.

In the third quarter, the Mustangs took control, securing the first points and establishing a 10-point lead, their largest of the game, courtesy of a three-pointer from Alexander.

Western's relentless defensive pressure caused rushed passes and shot clock violations, showcasing their prowess on both ends of the court.

Throughout the quarter, Western displayed remarkable precision in passing and effective communication, ultimately holding the lead and forcing TMU to play catch-up, resulting in a score of 49-41.

TMU remained intense defensively throughout the final quarter, fighting insanely hard to try to make up for the deficit in the last.

Western continued overpowering their opponent, displaying the intense control and dominance from the third quarter once more holding a solid double-digit lead, and a final score of 64-54 for the Mustangs.

"We really hype each other up," said Alexander, "once you feel good in a game it kind of all comes easy, you want to work together... when we work together and can push the ball that's where we get most of our points.

The Mustangs will be on the road next weekend as they face the Nipissing Lakers at 6 pm. Fans can tune in to watch live and cheer on the Mustangs at OUA.tv.
