Box Score London, ON - The Mustangs Women's Hockey team suffered a 2-1 shootout loss against the Carleton Ravens on Friday night.
The first period saw a lot of dominance by the Mustangs, spending plenty of time in the Ravens zone. Western had multiple scoring opportunities but weren't able to convert. The Mustangs got themselves into penalty trouble in the opening twenty minutes, sitting for four penalties but neither side were able to convert and the score remained 0-0 after the opening period.
The second period still had a lot of action in the Ravens zone. At 9:09 of the period, Elizabeth Gauthier rounded the back of the Carleton net and sent a wrister on the blocker side of the Ravens goaltender and opened the scoring for Western.
The lead was short lived as the Ravens were able to tie it up at 14:43. The score after the second period was tied at 1-1.
The third period brought strong attempts from both teams to take the lead. After unsuccessful attempts, the score of the third period stayed at 1-1. This meant that the game went into a seven-minute, 3-on-3 overtime. Neither side were able to find the net in the extra frame which forced the game into a shootout.
With a full set of penalty shots, the Ravens were able to get the lone goal in the 4th round and take the 2-1 win.
Head Coach Candice Moxley stated that the team "were their own worst enemy," when it came to the lack of goals during the game, but looking forward to tomorrow's game, the team "has to have short term memory and learn from this game and play a solid 60-minute game against the Nippising Lakers.
