On Friday night, Western went to Oshawa to continue their stretch of away games against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks.
Defensively, the Mustangs applied pressure on the Ridgebacks, picking them up early at halfcourt and double-teaming the ball. In the first quarter, they pulled down 8 defensive rebounds and had 4 steals, holding Ontario Tech to 6 points. Western led 18-6 after the first quarter.
Avarie Thomas rejoined the Mustangs basketball team after the recently concluded soccer season. Emily Capretta and Thomas led the Mustangs defensive effort with 5 and 3 steals respectively.
Jenna Button led the Mustangs and really started to take over in the 2nd quarter. She finished the half with 18 points on 5-7 shooting from the field and 3-4 from the 3PT line. The rest of the team worked around her and stifled the Ridgebacks offense. Western's defense pulled down 16 defensive rebounds and had 7 steals.
To start the 3rd quarter, the Mustangs got out to a 10-2 run, building their lead to 24 points halfway through the third quarter.
Ontario Tech fought back in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Mustangs 25-22, led by Kaleah Gosse who finished the night with 23 points on 3-8 3PT shooting and 4 rebounds. It wouldn't be enough though, as Western racked up their first win of the season, closing out the game 75-51.
