Box Score 2 London, ON – The Mustangs go 1&1 on the weekend with a 3-2 loss to Queen's on Friday night but power their way to a 6-2 win over Carleton on Sunday afternoon.
GAME RECAPS
Friday, November 1
Western would open the scoring on a powerplay marker early in the game. The Mustangs moved the puck around the offensive zone, Zach Power would take the puck from the corner and send a pass to Christian Aiello in the slot and he powered a wrister past Queen's Goaltender Christian Purboo and give Western the 1-0 advantage.
With just under two minutes remaining in the period the Gaels would get a powerplay marker of their own to tie the game at 1-1.
The Gaels would get another powerplay goal at the 8:05 mark of the second period and take a 2-1 lead which they would hold at the end of the 2
nd period.
In the third period the Mustangs would put plenty of pressure on the Gaels and with two and a half minutes remaining in regulation Eric Van Impe would send a shot on the Queen's net, it bounced off Purboo and right into the blue paint where Shane Bulitka would bury the rebound and tie the game up at 2-2. That score would hold up through regulation and we would need overtime to determine a winner.
In the extra frame Queen's would convert just a minute into OT and take the 3-2 win.
Matteo Drobac made 32 saves in the Mustangs net on the night.
Sunday, November 3
A three-goal third period saw the Mustangs take a 6-2 win on Sunday afternoon.
Carleton would open the scoring just 2:41 into the period but Western would respond late in the frame.
With under ten seconds remaining, Jack York would send the puck toward the Carleton net and Franco Sproviero would get a piece of the puck and tie the game up at 1-1.
The Mustangs would convert again early in the 2
nd period when Aidan Prueter sent Shane Bullitka in on a partial break away and the Mustangs captain went short side, over the blocker of Carleton's Tye Austin and extended the Western lead to 2-1.
Later in the second period it would be Bullitka and Prueter connecting again, this time Bullitka would get the shot in front of the Carelton net and Prueter was on the doorstep to get the tip in goal and add to the Western advantage at 3-1.
In the third period, the Mustangs would open the scoring on the man advantage. Noah Danielson gained the offensive zone and took a shot which would hit a Ravens defender's leg and deflected right to the middle of the ice where Jake Gravelle fired a wrist shot to the top corner of the Carleton net and it was 4-1 Western.
Carleton would trim the Mustangs lead to 4-2 around the midway mark of the period.
With just over three minutes remaining the Mustangs would be awarded a penalty shot and Zach Power would get the puck at center ice. Power would take the puck wide on entry to the Carleton zone and then make a couple of head fakes on the way to the net and toe-drag to the backhand and he roofed it past Carleton's Austin and Western was up 5-2.
Late in the period Carleton would pull their goalie and put some pressure on the Mustangs but Gravelle would get the puck in his own end and send the puck off the glass and it would slide the length of the ice and into the Ravens net to finish off the 6-2 win.
Matteo Drobac made 41 saves in the win for the Mustangs.
With the win Western sits at 6&2 on the season and in 1
st place in the OUA West.
