Mustangs drop 3-2 loss to Toronto

Toronto, ON – The Mustangs led through 40 minutes but couldn't hold on and dropped a 3-2 decision to the Toronto Varsity Blues on Thursday night.

After neither side could find the back of the net in the opening period, Western would light the lamp early in the second period. After Jack Sander tried to send the puck deep into the Toronto zone, it hit a stanchion and jetted the puck into the slot of the Varsity Blues zone and Western's Christian Aiello would hop on the scoring opportunity and bury it to give the Mustangs the 1-0 lead.

Toronto would respond just over three minutes later while short-handed and tie the game at 1-1.

Later in the period, Western would have a response. Drew Wawrow got the puck just inside the Western blue line and sent a distance pass to Nick Yearwood in the neutral zone, who was sprung on an abbreviated breakaway, and he sent a hard wrister to the short side of Toronto goaltender Jordan Fairlie and off both posts and in to give Western a 2-1 lead.

The Varsity Blues would bookend the third period with a goal just over two minutes into the frame, and then with just over two minutes left, they would score again to get their first lead of the night, one that would hold up as the winner.

Matteo Drobac made 28 saves for the Mustangs on the night.
