North Bay, ON - The Mustangs Women's Hockey team faced a 0-4 loss against the Nipissing Lakers on Friday night.
In the first period, the Mustangs had strong defensive play and control in their own zone. They made sure there was always a player between the Nipissing Lakers and the net, making it difficult for Nipissing to make any offensive momentum or take quality shots.
Late in the period, with just 1:37 remaining, the Mustangs were called for a tripping penalty. Nipissing took advantage of the power play opportunity, breaking through to open the scoring and taking a 1-0 lead as the period closed.
In the second period, the Mustangs faced some adversity early on with a penalty just three minutes in. Nipissing scored their second power play goal at 3:02 into the period. The Mustangs then had their first power play opportunity with 9:40 remaining in the second period after a hooking penalty against Nipissing but couldn't convert on the man advantage.
A second power play came for the Mustangs after a slashing penalty against Nipissing, but again, the team couldn't score.
Goaltender Ella Brabrook made a huge save on a Nipissing slot shot at the end of the second period. Nipissing held a 2-0 lead heading into the final frame.
The third period started with the Mustangs coming out strong. Just 50 seconds into the period, the Mustangs had a chance with a 5-on-3 advantage. They had a few opportunities to capitalize but were unable to score a goal during this power play.
Nipissing was called for their fourth straight penalty with 11 minutes left in the game, but the Mustangs couldn't take advantage of this opportunity. With 5:50 remaining in the game, Nipissing extended their lead with another goal. The Lakers then added their fourth goal with just two minutes left, sealing the 4-0 win at the end of the night.
