Box Score WATERLOO, ON - In the final game of the 2023/24 regular season, the Western Mustangs were on the road against the Laurier Golden Hawks, working to collect the win in the final quarter, at 79-76.

Both sides came out fighting hard into the first quarter, with the Golden Hawks going on a 9-2 run to open the game, putting the Mustangs on the chase. 

The energy was high throughout the first half of the quarter, as Laurier continued to build upon their lead, going up by as much as 11 as Western continued to push them hard, attempting to bridge the gap, bringing it down to only a couple possessions. 

While the Mustangs began to chip away at the Laurier lead, they continued to struggle, breaking through the Golden Hawks' defense, ending the first quarter trailing by nine, 26-17.
 

Western opened the second quarter powerfully on both ends of the court, completing intense steals and charging down the court going on a 7-0 run, closing the gap down to two points in the opening minute of play. 

With just over three minutes remaining in the first half, Laurier had seen success off their rebounding, pulling down the majority, while extending their lead back up to nine points as the Mustangs attempted to gain the lead into halftime. 

As the first half wrapped up, the Mustangs were down by 11, at 46-35
 

It was a strong start to the second half for the Mustangs, quickly closing the double-digit deficit from the last quarter, going on a 8-0 run. 

Western quickly tied the game up at 48 a piece around the mid-way mark, as Western soon took their first lead of the night. 

As the final minutes of the quarter wrapped up, the Mustangs maintained a narrow lead, up by two at 60-58.  
 

After out-scoring their opponent 25-12 in the last quarter, Western was positioned in the lead throughout this fourth and final quarter. 

It was an incredibly intense final few minutes of play, as the Mustangs gave all they could to not only stay in the lead, but build upon it throughout a lengthy final minute. 

Tensions were high as the Golden Hawks brought the game within a single possession with less than 20 seconds remaining on the game clock.  

Ultimately, the Mustangs remained successful in clinching the victory, with a narrow margin of 79-76.
