Are you interested in becoming a varsity athlete?

Western's Novice Rowing Program provides an excellent introduction into the sport of rowing for athletes with no prior rowing experience. With dedicated coaching, quality resources and support from our varsity team, the Novice program offers committed individuals the opportunity to become successful varsity athletes. Throughout the Novice season, these individuals will not only learn a new sport but also develop important leadership, commitment and teamwork skills.

The selection process begins with an initial expression of interest through our Google Form and attending an information session led by our coaching staff and student executive team.

All athletes will participate in a series of tryouts which include a beep test to assess fitness and power test on the ergometer. Following tryouts, athletes will then be selected for our Novice program, where they will learn how to row in a competitive training environment. Throughout the fall season, athletes will have the opportunity to race at a number of regattas and compete against other university novice crews. The on-water season runs from September to mid-November, at which time we begin indoor training through the winter to prepare for the upcoming fall season. Team practices are six mornings a week, with some of those days also including afternoon strength training or secondary rows. By providing a positive, supportive and motivating training environment, the Novice program prepares individuals to excel as varsity athletes in the following years.
