Mustangs cruise past Algoma, 87-49

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON -

The Mustangs took on the Thunderbirds in Sault Ste. Marie on Saturday afternoon, looking for their seventh win of the season.

In the second straight game without co-captain Milan John and Matteo Zagar, the Mustangs looked to show off their bench depth yet again. In the first quarter, seven Mustangs got on the scoresheet, as Western built a 12-point lead, up 24-12 after the first quarter.

At the half, all nine travelling Mustangs got on the board, as Western led at the half 45-22. Rookie forward Hunter Thompson had 8 points and 7 rebounds, leading for Western.

The third and fourth quarters saw the same trends as the first half. The Mustangs offense continued to share the ball, five players scoring in double digits on their way to 87 points. Western's zone defense worked well, restricting the Thunderbirds offense to 49 points on the night. Mikyle Malabuyoc finished with 13 points and 6 assists, and rookie forward Troy Nekkers finished with a season-high 12 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals.

The Mustangs are back in action on Friday, January 17th against the Guelph Gryphons at Alumni Hall in London. Tune in live on OUA.tv.
