LONDON, ONĀ
On Saturday evening, the Mustangs looked to bounce back after the Gryphons snapped their eight game win streak. Veteran forward Sarah Harvey was back in action for the Mustangs and reclaimed her starting spot.Ā
The Mustangs came out and pushed the pace early, getting out quickly in transition. Their set offence also looked much better, moving the ball around well and finding the open shots under the basket. They quickly built a 9-point lead after the first quarter, 25-16.Ā
The Lions fought back in the second quarter, but Western's offense continued to find ways to score. Jenna Button was on fire from beyond the arc, going 4-5 from three-point range. She had a team-high 16 points at the break as the Mustangs led 44-38.Ā
Western continued to share the rock and push the pace up the floor. Paris Alexander had four of the team's 15 assists, alongside her 22 points and 7 rebounds. York's offence struggled from the field, and their shooting woes from beyond the arc continued. As a team, they were 1-16 from the three point line. They extended their lead to as much as 18 points, leading 70-57 heading into the final frame.Ā
They closed out the game with a 18-point victory against the Lions, earning their 10th win of the season 92-74. Western heads to Guelph on Wednesday, January 22nd at 6PM EST for a rematch against the Gryphons. Tune in on OUA.tv.
Head Coach Nate McKibbon was proud of his teams' rebound win. "I thought the defense kept the game going, [it] kept the high tempo. The only thing that really slowed us down is them getting to the free throw line".
Looking ahead to their rematch against the Gryphons, he's focused on his team giving their best effort. "We're going to go home, we're going to rest, we're going to take care of our bodies, reconnect with our families, and come ready to work on Monday. We're going to take what we did well this weekend and try to turn those one and two minute stretches into three and four. I don't think they've seen our best effort and I know our players are eager to put it out there", said McKibbon.
