Waterloo, ON – The Western Mustangs opened their season on the road in a hard-fought matchup against the Waterloo Warriors, coming up just short in a 4–3.
Western came out strong in the opening frame, capitalizing early on special teams. ust three minutes in, Eric Van Impe struck on the power play, with assists from Zach Power and Christiano Aiello, to give the Mustangs the early lead.
Midway through the period, Western earned another powerplay. At 7:46, the Mustangs doubled their lead from Brett Willits got another power-play goal of the night, set up by Nicholas Yearwood and Tye McSorley. The Warriors answered back late in the frame, cutting the deficit in half with their first goal of the game. Western finished the period on another power play push and took a 2–1 lead into the intermission.
The Warriors tied things up quickly in the second period, scoring just 28 seconds after the puck drop. Both teams generated chances throughout, including a pair of power plays, but neither side could break the deadlock. After 40 minutes, the score sat even at 2–2.
Waterloo grabbed their first lead of the night less than two minutes into the final frame. The Mustangs earned a late power play and applied heavy pressure, but Waterloo added another goal in the final minute to extend their lead to 4–2. With just two seconds on the clock, Ben Campeau scored a late goal, assisted by Willits and Power, to make it 4–3 before time expired.
