Box Score Toronto, ON – The Western Mustangs wrapped up their Toronto road trip Friday night with a 4-2 loss to the TMU Bold.
Western started strong and creating pressure early in the offensive zone. Four minutes into the game, TMU took a penalty, giving the Mustangs their first power play of the night. Lawson Sherk (#39) scored a goal to open the game and put Western ahead 1-0.
Midway through the period, TMU went to the power play, but Western's defenders and goaltender Jack McNaughton (#33) held firm to keep the lead. The Bold had another man advantage late in the frame but couldn't capitalize. The Mustangs carried a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
TMU came out with energy to start the second and tied the game just over a minute in. Western soon earned another power play, but offsetting penalties led to a four-on-four play, and TMU scored during the following power play to take a 2-1 lead.
With five minutes remaining, McNaughton made a key stop on a TMU breakaway to keep Western within one. The Mustangs faced a penalty late in the period, giving TMU a two-man advantage that converted another power-play goal, extending the lead to 3-1.
Western answered before the period ended as Sam Willits (#24) scored his first goal of the season with 28 seconds left, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
TMU struck again 12 minutes into the third, extending their lead to 4-2. Western pulled their goalie in the final minutes to push for a comeback but couldn't find the back of the net before time expired.
The Mustangs will return home next Saturday, October 18, to host the York Lions at 3:00 p.m. at Thompson Arena.
