London, ON – The Western Mustangs men's rugby team closed out their regular season with a strong 50-8 victory over the McMaster Marauders on Saturday night at Alumni Field.
Western came out fast, scoring just three minutes into the match to take an early 5-0 lead. #12 Nolan Foley added another try at the seven-minute mark, followed by a successful conversion from #15 Kohl Kletke to make it 12-0. McMaster got on the board with a penalty kick at 18 minutes, cutting the deficit to 12-3.
The Mustangs quickly regained control, as #7 Connor Arthur scored in the 23rd minute and #15 Kohl Kletke converted to extend the lead to 19-3. #2 Jonathan Criswick followed up with another try six minutes later to make it 24-3 heading into halftime.
Western kept their momentum in the second half. #6 Garin Schroeder scored in the 45th minute, with #15 Kletke once again adding the conversion. #19 Nolan Priestly crossed the line at 57 minutes, and another successful kick made it 36-3. The Mustangs added another converted try at the 63-minute mark to move ahead 45-3.
McMaster broke through with their first try at 71 minutes, but Western answered quickly as #14 Maximus Keller scored in the closing minutes to seal the 50-8 win.
"Good to get the win, obviously, but I think there's more there than we showed. And that's okay, as long as we're ready for next week." Head coach Ian McLeod said post-game.
With the victory, the Mustangs finish their regular season on a high note and now prepare for the upcoming OUA playoffs.
