Mustangs Battle Hard but Fall 5-3 to Lakehead

Thunder Bay, ON – Western wrapped up their weekend road trip in Thunder Bay on Saturday night, losing 5-3 to the Lakehead Thunderwolves after a close back-and-forth contest.

In the first period, both teams opened with energy and physical play. Lakehead jumped ahead early with two goals midway through the frame, but Western stayed composed. On the penalty kill, Owen MacNeil picked off a pass and scored shorthanded at 13:48 to make it 2-1. Lakehead answered with a shorthanded goal of their own late in the period, and the Mustangs trailed 3-1 after the first.

In the second period, Western tightened defensively and pushed the pace. Zach Power scored at 13:46, assisted by Nicholas Yearwood, cutting the lead to 3-2. The Mustangs killed off multiple penalties, but Lakehead regained a two-goal lead on the power-play late in the frame to go up 4–2.

Just 56 seconds into the final period, Yearwood scored off a feed from Shane Bulitka to bring Western within one again. The Mustangs generated several chances and held strong defensively through a stretch of penalty kills. Pushing hard with the net empty, Western couldn't find the equalizer, and Lakehead sealed the win with another goal at 18:28, ending the game 5-3.

Western finished 0-for-5 on the power play, while Lakehead went 1-for-9. Goaltender Jack McNaughton made 29 saves in the effort.

The Mustangs return to Thompson Arena on Thursday, November 6, for a 7:00 p.m. matchup against the Laurier Golden Hawks.
