The Western Mustangs skated to a 4–1 victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Friday night at Thompson Arena, powered by balanced scoring and strong defensive play.
The first period was evenly matched, with both teams creating chances early. Western controlled the puck for much of the opening period, testing the Waterloo net and keeping Ella Brabrook busy with several key saves. Despite the early pressure, neither team could find the back of the net.
Western opened the scoring in the second period, with captain Emma Campbell (#71) netting a clean goal through the side of the net at 19:32, followed by Adeline Kristoff (#51) extending the lead shortly after. Waterloo responded with a goal midway through the period, making it 2–1, but the Mustangs stayed composed and maintained steady pressure in the offensive zone.
In the third period, Western's depth was on full display. Janique LaBossiere (#16) and Lacey Larmand (#94) each found the back of the net, with Larmand's strike proving to be the game-winner. The Mustangs' defense, led by Brabrook in net, limited Waterloo's opportunities for the rest of the game, securing the 4–1 win.
Head coach Brittney Howard praised her team's effort and growing depth: "To have all four lines play tonight and get contributions from everybody — it's huge," she said. "We've taken huge strides since opening night. This game was a full showcase of the group's commitment and execution."
Howard also noted the importance of the team's focus on key moments in the game: "We had five players in front of the net blocking shots, and within a shift or two, we were able to score. That kind of consistency and teamwork is huge for us."
Larmand highlighted the team's composure late in the game: "We just wanted to keep the momentum going," said Larmand. "We've been in the lead before and let teams come back, so staying composed and working together was the biggest thing."
Western came out with urgency in the final period, maintaining their structure and energy on both sides of the puck to close out the win.
The Mustangs return to Thompson Arena on Saturday, November 8, to face the Carleton Ravens at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are available at mustangs.ca/tickets.
