London, ON – The Mustangs family joins the entire sports community in mourning the passing of coach, mentor and friend Michael (Mike) Tomlinson.
Tomlinson passed away unexpectedly on January 3, 2026, in his 84th year. He was always a calm and compassionate leader in his many endeavours at Western.
Music was a lifelong passion, Tomlinson was a member of the Marching Band. His other great passion was the game of golf, serving as an assistant coach with the Mustangs Men's Golf team for 27 years. A Mustang through and through you could often see Tomlinson in the stands at Western Alumni Stadium cheering on the football team.
"We were together coaching Western golf for 27 years. He was the most kind and understanding person possible." said Jim Waite, Head Coach of the Mustangs Men's Golf team. "The players loved him and dozens from the past have sent condolence notices. We won six provincial championships, and Mike never took any of the credit when much of it was due to him. He will be greatly missed by the players, by the program and by me."
His professional career also included inspiring the younger generation as he dedicated 33 years to the London Board of Education, serving as a teacher, consultant, vice principal and principal.
When his wife Lynne passed away during COVID, the Tomlinson family was not able to gather with family and friends to honour her life as they would have liked. All are invited to a celebration of life for both Lynne and Michael at the A. Millard George Funeral Home, 60 Ridout Street South, London, on Saturday, January 24, 2026 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.
