WATERLOO, Ontario — Presley Daschuk made 41 saves as the Mustangs took a 3-2 win over Waterloo on Thursday night.
Western was outshot 43-12, but made their opportunities count, scoring in each period.
Western killed three Waterloo power plays in the first period and still opened the scoring at 12:24, when Haylie Kirkpatrick finished a chance set up by Lacey Larmand and Sara Forwell. Earlier, Western worked through Ava Strome's cross-checking penalty at 4:06 and Leah Barnard's head-contact penalty at 9:57 without allowing a goal. Claire Stewart was whistled for hooking at 13:23, but Western again got through the full two minutes short-handed. Waterloo answered late on Ava Myers' goal at 18:56, sending the game to the first intermission tied 1-1.
Western responded quickly after Waterloo's Leah Macsween scored 1:24 into the second period, with Sadie Mulligan finishing at 2:23 off assists from Ava Strome and Janique LaBossiere to tie the game at 2-2. Western then spent the rest of the frame protecting that score while facing two Waterloo power plays. Claire Stewart's interference penalty at 11:57 and Ava Hillier's tripping penalty at 16:57 each put Western short-handed, but both penalties were killed without another goal. The teams split the period's scoring 1-1, and Western went to the third tied 2-2.
Western scored the only goal of the third period and kept Waterloo off the board to finish ahead 3-2. Forwell provided the Western goal at 3:04, with Sadie Allen and Arnica Bulmer credited with the assists. Western also went on the power play at 3:55 after Erika Porter was called for boarding, but the advantage ended two minutes later without another goal. The 1-0 period was enough for Western to close out the final frame with the one-goal result.
