Western vs York October 31, 75-59: Mustangs Erupt in Second Half to Secure 12th Straight Victory Over Lions

LONDON, ON – The Western Mustangs men's basketball team delivered a commanding second-half performance on Saturday evening, overcoming a halftime deficit to defeat the York Lions 75-59 at Thompson Arena. A decisive 12-0 run to open  the third quarter transformed a tightly contested matchup into a convincing victory, as Western remained undefeated at 3-0 and extended its remarkable winning streak against York to 12 consecutive games.

Lucas Sheets led the Mustangs with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Tye Cotie recorded an impressive double-double of his own with 13 points, 12 rebounds and three steals. Andres Garcia added 15 points and four assists as Western's defensive intensity and unselfish ball movement helped the Mustangs outscore York 44-25 in the second half.

Entering the contest, Western had won its previous 11 meetings against York, a streak dating back to January 30, 2015. However, the Lions arrived determined to challenge that dominance, establishing an early advantage behind efficient perimeter shooting.

York opened the scoring with consecutive baskets from Nickele Harris before Sheets put Western on the board with an open three-pointer off an assist from Garcia. The Lions continued to apply pressure from beyond the arc, with Daren Clarke connecting on three first-quarter triples to keep York in front. Owen Urquhart provided an important spark off the bench, finishing two layups inside, while Imisi Motunde added a jumper and Garcia converted a layup following a steal. Western gradually chipped away at the deficit, with Urquhart knocking down two free throws to tie the game at 15. However, another three-pointer from Clarke restored York's advantage, and the Lions entered the second quarter leading 18-16.

York carried its offensive momentum into the second quarter, with Clarke connecting on another three-pointer before Josiah McKnight extended the Lions' lead to seven. Western responded through Cotie, who finished a layup through contact and converted the free throw to complete the three-point play. Moments later, Cotie followed a missed shot with a powerful putback dunk, bringing the Mustangs within two. Garcia then knocked down a pair of free throws to tie the game at 23.

The Lions regained control through consecutive three-pointers from Malakai Ayres-Olson, forcing Western to continue battling from behind. Sheets answered with a layup before Milan John connected on a contested mid-range jumper to keep the Mustangs within striking distance. Emmanuel Akot then created separation from his defender and buried a step-back three-pointer, cutting York's lead to just one point at 32-31. Despite Western's late push, Daniel Kolawole finished inside in the closing minute to send the Mustangs into halftime trailing 34-31.

Following the game, Western head coach Brad Campbell emphasized that the team's second-half turnaround came from renewed focus rather than major tactical adjustments.

"I think just overall, we just kind of refocused at halftime and focused on the game plan," said Campbell. "Really no adjustments."

Campbell acknowledged that defensive lapses and a lack of concentration had prevented Western from executing consistently in the opening half, but the Mustangs responded with a completely different level of intensity after the break.

Sheets opened the third quarter with a layup before Garcia followed with another basket to give Western its first lead of the evening. Sheets then scored again after Cotie forced a turnover, and Akot finished inside off an assist from Cotie to extend the advantage to five. York called a timeout, but Western's momentum was only beginning to build.

Cotie intercepted another pass and converted a layup before Akot collected a steal and found Sheets for another basket. In just over two minutes, the Mustangs had completely overturned the halftime deficit, opening the quarter on a remarkable 12-0 run to take a 43-34 lead.

Western's defensive pressure continued to disrupt York's offence, creating opportunities for the Mustangs to capitalize on the other end. Urquhart added another layup before Joe Baggaley-Lacerte connected on a three-pointer to give Western its first double-digit advantage of the evening at 48-37.

Urquhart also provided valuable minutes against York's imposing frontcourt, battling 7-foot-3 Lions centre Arjun Bassi despite a five-inch height disadvantage. Standing at 6-foot-8, Urquhart demonstrated his physicality and determination around the basket, finishing with 10 points and eight rebounds while providing Western with an important presence inside.

Cotie remained a commanding force around the basket, collecting rebounds and finishing through traffic as Western maintained control. Sheets continued his efficient scoring with a jumper, while John added a layup late in the quarter. Cotie capped off the period with a putback at the buzzer, sending the Mustangs into the final quarter leading 56-46.

Western outscored York 25-12 in the third quarter, shooting an outstanding 63.2% from the field while holding the Lions without a three-pointer. The Mustangs also generated 10 points off turnovers during the period, highlighting the defensive intensity that completely shifted the momentum of the game.

Reflecting on the decisive turnaround, Sheets credited Western's defensive effort for creating better offensive opportunities.

"Our defensive intensity, right? We get stops, we can get out in transition, make easier shots," said Sheets. "Getting those stops and rebounds ... made the difference in the second half."

The Mustangs carried that energy into the fourth quarter, with John opening the scoring on a layup off an assist from Sheets. Cotie continued to make his presence felt defensively, blocking a shot before securing the rebound, while Garcia finished a layup following another Akot steal to extend Western's advantage to 14.

York attempted to respond through Clarke and Christopher Williams, briefly cutting the deficit to single digits, but the Mustangs remained composed. Urquhart converted another layup inside before John knocked down two free throws to restore a double-digit advantage. Garcia continued to deliver offensively, scoring in the paint before adding a mid-range jumper as Western approached the final minutes.

With just over two minutes remaining, John collected a steal and found Sheets for a layup, extending Western's lead to 14. Garcia then delivered the finishing blow, connecting on a three-pointer with 1:44 remaining to give the Mustangs their largest advantage of the evening at 73-56. Sheets added two free throws in the final minute as Western secured the 75-59 victory.

Sheets finished with a game-high 17 points and 10 rebounds, shooting an efficient 7-for-11 from the field while contributing two assists and a block. His ability to score efficiently and battle on the glass was instrumental throughout the contest.

"My teammates were giving me the ball in the right spots," said Sheets. "It's a lot of fun playing with these guys, especially when we get out and run."

Cotie was equally influential, recording 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds while shooting 5-for-7 from the field. His three steals helped ignite Western's third-quarter surge, while his defensive activity and rebounding provided the Mustangs with a consistent advantage inside.

Speaking about his performance, Cotie emphasized his commitment to rebounding and helping fill the void left by departing players, identifying his effort on the glass as a personal priority entering the season.

Garcia added 15 points and four assists, shooting an efficient 6-for-9 from the field. Urquhart contributed 10 points and eight rebounds off the bench, while John finished with nine points, six assists and two steals.

Western's second-half dominance was reflected throughout the final statistics. The Mustangs forced 13 York turnovers while committing just six of their own, converting those opportunities into 16 points. Western also held a commanding 38-16 advantage in points in the paint and finished with 20 assists, demonstrating the team's ability to create opportunities through unselfish ball movement.

The victory marked Western's 12th consecutive win over York, continuing a streak that began on January 30, 2015. The Mustangs have now won 15 of their 18 meetings with the Lions since 2006, further strengthening their impressive record in the matchup.

With the win, Western improves to 3-0 on the season, while York falls to 2-2. The Mustangs will now prepare for their upcoming road trip to Kingston, looking to carry their defensive momentum into another important stretch of OUA competition.

Campbell acknowledged the importance of maintaining the team's regular routines during a demanding academic period, noting that several players had been balancing exams with their basketball responsibilities.

"We're looking forward to it," said Campbell, as the Mustangs turn their attention to the challenges ahead.
