LONDON, ON – The Western Mustangs women's basketball team showed resilience and determination on Saturday evening but ultimately fell 87-73 to the undefeated York Lions at Thompson Arena. Despite overcoming a 19-point deficit to pull within seven in the second quarter, Western could not contain York's consistent perimeter shooting, bringing an end to the Mustangs' five-game winning streak against the Lions.
Entering the contest with victories in each of their previous five meetings against York, including an 83-75 win in February, Western faced a Lions team looking to extend its unbeaten start to the season. Nicole Daly led the Mustangs with 20 points, while Monique Monplaisir delivered an impressive performance off the bench with 16 points and five rebounds.
Both teams came out firing offensively, with Daly immediately establishing herself as a scoring threat. She opened Western's scoring with a layup before connecting on a three-pointer to account for the Mustangs' first five points. However, York quickly found its rhythm from beyond the arc, with Gabby Di Pietro and Niamh Heath helping the Lions build an early advantage. Daly continued to provide a spark, scoring 13 of Western's 19 first-quarter points, but York's efficient shooting proved difficult to contain. The Lions connected on four of six three-point attempts, shooting 66.7% from beyond the arc and 66.7% overall. Despite Daly's outstanding opening quarter, Western entered the second trailing 31-19.
York carried its momentum into the second quarter, extending its advantage to 42-23 with just over six minutes remaining. Facing a 19-point deficit, the Mustangs responded with one of their strongest stretches of the evening. Reese Burleigh sparked the comeback with a layup before Monplaisir followed with a finish inside. Paris Alexander then capitalized on a defensive steal, driving to the basket for two points and forcing York to call a timeout. Western continued to apply pressure, with Monplaisir knocking down a three-pointer and Emily Capretta converting a pair of free throws to bring the Mustangs within eight. Daly capped off the run with another three-pointer, cutting York's lead to just 44-37 after Western had trailed by as many as 19. Although the Lions responded with timely baskets in the closing minutes, Western's determined effort kept the game competitive, entering halftime trailing 51-39.
Following the game, Western head coach Nate McKibbon reflected on the challenges of containing York's early offensive momentum.
"I think the big thing is that we didn't get bodies in front of them early on in transition defence," said McKibbon. "We allowed them to create advantages and we never really got set, so we're constantly scrambling."
Despite the difficult opening, McKibbon praised his team's response in the second quarter, particularly the defensive activity and unselfish offensive play that helped fuel the comeback.
"I like that a lot of the buckets came off of assists," said McKibbon. "I like a lot of the fact that it was attacking the rim and created contact, and a lot of the stuff was created by our defence."
York emerged from halftime determined to regain control, opening the third quarter with a three-pointer from Chantelle Stuart. Alexander immediately answered with a corner three of her own, cutting the deficit back to 12 points. However, the Lions responded with another explosive stretch from beyond the arc. Consecutive three-pointers from Di Pietro and Heath pushed York's lead to 20, before Katie Leudy added another to extend the advantage to 65-42, the Lions' largest lead of the game. Western continued to compete, with Daly providing another finish inside while Monplaisir contributed two important baskets during the quarter. Annie Balfe also delivered valuable minutes off the bench, adding four points in the frame as the Mustangs worked to generate opportunities around the basket. Despite their efforts, York maintained control and entered the final quarter leading 75-54.
The Mustangs refused to let the deficit define their final quarter, continuing to battle on both ends of the floor. Daly opened Western's fourth-quarter scoring with a tough layup, while Sarah Harvey followed with a finish inside off an assist from Balfe. Monplaisir remained a consistent offensive presence, converting another basket in the paint before Burleigh and Capretta added layups to keep Western's offence moving. With just over a minute remaining, Monplaisir connected on her second three-pointer of the evening, cutting the deficit to 15 points. Sydney Cowan then added a layup before Monplaisir scored once more in the closing seconds. Western outscored York 19-12 in the final quarter, demonstrating its determination to compete until the final buzzer, but the Lions ultimately secured the 87-73 victory.
Daly led the Mustangs with 20 points and five rebounds, shooting 9-for-19 from the field. Her explosive 13-point first quarter helped Western remain within reach during York's early shooting surge. Monplaisir was equally impactful, finishing with 16 points and five rebounds while shooting 7-for-13 from the field. Her contributions off the bench proved especially valuable during Western's second-quarter comeback and its late offensive push.
Alexander added nine points and two steals, including an important three-pointer to open Western's second-half scoring. Cowan contributed six points and a game-high five steals, while Balfe provided six points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals in a well-rounded performance off the bench.
Western's defensive effort remained a bright spot throughout the contest, with the Mustangs recording 20 steals and forcing York into 26 turnovers. Western also held a 42-34 advantage in points in the paint and received 30 points from its bench, doubling York's bench production. However, the Lions' perimeter efficiency ultimately proved decisive, as York connected on 12 three-pointers while Western finished 5-for-25 from beyond the arc.
The result marked Western's first loss to York since November 2018, ending a five-game winning streak in the head-to-head series. The Mustangs had previously defeated the Lions in five consecutive meetings, including victories in each of the previous three seasons. While Saturday's result did not go Western's way, the team's ability to respond to adversity, create opportunities through defensive pressure and compete until the final possession provided encouraging signs moving forward.
With the loss, Western moves to 1-2 on the season, while York improves to 4-0. The Mustangs will look to build on the positives from their comeback effort as they continue their OUA campaign.
