Mustangs drop 81-61 loss to TMU in OUA Quarterfinal

Toronto, ON — The Mustangs fell 81-61 to the TMU Bold in the OUA Quarterfinal on Saturday afternoon

Toronto, ON felt like one of those places where you can hear the stakes before you even see the floor. This was the OUA Quarterfinal, and every trip mattered. Western came in ready to fight, but the Mustangs ran into a TMU defense that squeezed space, forced tough looks, and made every possession feel heavy. Western shot 29.3 percent from the field, forced 25 turnovers, and kept swinging, but could not fully turn those stops into the run they needed. TMU owned the paint with 46 points inside and the afternoon ended 81-61.

First Quarter
The game opened with Western throwing the first punch, and for a moment it felt like the Mustangs had the exact start you dream of in a playoff road game. Paris Alexander attacked for a layup, then followed with a free throw, and when Sydney Cowan stepped into a three to make it 6-0 at 9:12, it was the kind of opening that makes a team believe it can control the day. Western stayed aggressive early, but the quarter also carried the first warning signs. Turnovers started stacking, TMU began to turn extra possessions into rhythm, and the Bold slowly leaned into their inside game. By 1:29, TMU had pushed the lead to 24-13, sparked by an Ella McDonald three that felt like it landed with extra weight. Western trailed 24-15 after ten.

Second Quarter
Western's response in the second was steady and determined, the kind of push that keeps the game alive when the opponent is trying to stretch it. Emily Capretta knocked down a three at 5:15 to cut into the gap, and you could see the Mustangs settling into their defensive identity, trying to turn stops into momentum. Natalie Vanheeswyk gave Western a huge lift early in the quarter with two blocks that felt like statements, the kind of plays that wake up a bench even when you are on the road. Ainsley Lane added pace and composure, getting to the line and making plays that kept Western within striking distance. But TMU's pressure kept forcing difficult possessions, and the Bold kept finding paint touches to keep the cushion steady. At halftime, Western trailed 45-34.

Third Quarter
The third quarter was where Western tried to flip the story, and for a stretch it started to feel possible. Renée Armstrong hit two threes that cracked the game open just enough to spark belief, trimming the margin to 53-42 with 6:06 left. Paris Alexander answered late with a three of her own, another shot that tried to pull Western closer and change the rhythm. But every time Western took a step, TMU answered inside, protecting the lead with physical paint play and steady finishing. The Bold carried a 63-49 advantage into the fourth.

Fourth Quarter
Western needed a burst to start the fourth, and the Mustangs chased it with real urgency. Alexander buried an early three at 7:29, Armstrong attacked for a layup at 4:41, and Cowan hit another three at 5:14, each basket feeling like another attempt to pry the door open. But TMU stayed composed, kept scoring when Western threatened, and continued to control the interior. A final layup at 0:38 sealed it, and the quarter ended with TMU closing the game out 81-61.

With the loss, Western's 2025-26 season comes to a close. The Mustangs finish 15-9 overall. We wish our graduating seniors Renée Armstrong, Catíe Joosten, and Emily Capretta all the best as they move forward, and we want to thank all of the fans, families, and supporters of Mustangs Basketball for their energy all season.
